About Sam

Dr. Herbert grew up in Davis, California where he played baseball for Davis Senior High. His love of baseball took him to Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo. He played outfield for the Mustangs for 4 years. In 2004 he was able to pursue his dream of playing professional baseball after being drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals. He played center field for two years within the Cardinals organization. As a result of a shoulder injury he returned to Cal Poly and completed his BS degree in kinesiology, Cum Laude, with a minor in philosophy. In 2007 he was accepted to the Indiana University School of Optometry. He earned his Doctor of Optometry (O.D.) degree in 2011, with Honors. His internship rotations included training in primary eye care, specialty contact lenses, ocular disease and refractive surgery co-management. Dr. Herbert is certified (TMOD) to diagnose and treat eye disease, including glaucoma. Because of his sports background he specializes in sports vision and contact lenses. He and his wife Lilli live in Napa with their three young sons. Dr. Herbert’s hobbies include playing with his boys, exercising and watching movies in his free time.
